Kodak ScanMate i940 Scanner Driver. Kodak Document Imaging introduces the Scanmate i940, a portable document scanner for Apple Macintosh users. The manufacturer recommends a daily scan volume of up to 500 sheets for the DIN A4 device.
Standalone scanners such as the Kodak ScanMate i940 Scanner are falling out of fashion recently. Some of the decline in popularity can be attributed to all-in-ones, such as the HP Photosmart Plus eAll-in-One, Canon Pixma MG5250 or Kodak's ESP 1.2.
The appeal of having one device that not only scans but also prints, faxes and photocopies is undeniable, while improvements to technology have banished concerns over 'jack of all trades' devices that cover all the bases but don't excel in any area.

So the Kodak ScanMate i940 Scanner has a task ahead of it to prove itself relevant. Its main selling point is its compact and portable design. While it's handy for those of us who don't have the space for a flatbed scanner in our homes, its main use is for travelling.
Just a bit smaller than the already rather compact, and very good, Canon imageFORMULA P-215, the Kodak ScanMate i940 Scanner is light and easy to carry.
It can be powered by a single USB connection, although faster scanning times are achieved by connecting the scanner to a power socket or second USB port. Being able to power the scanner via USB makes it even more convenient, without having to root around for a plug socket, but having the option to only use one USB port is a nice choice for those of us already using multiple USB devices.
While the Kodak ScanMate i940 Scanner's size is convenient, the installation process and software included was a bit more troublesome, with the software in particular occasionally crashing. We also needed to go online to download the latest drivers from the Kodak website to get it to work properly.
When scanning is underway, the noise can be quite distracting, though the fast scan times of around nine seconds at least means the noise didn't last long. The images themselves were very good.
Verdict
Overall this is a flawed device that scans well, and is portable, but is also quite expensive and has some installation issues.
Kodak's new ScanMate i940 is a good example of the latest generation of portable compact USB scanners, aimed at mobile professionals or those needing a convenient desktop scanner with a small footprint.
Externally it's identical to the existing ScanMate i920 model, and also has the same quoted maximum scan speed of 20 pages per minute (ppm) for black-and-white or greyscale documents at 200dpi. Its main claim to fame over the i920 is the fact that it can be powered via USB as well as via the usual mains adapter. This can save a bit of clutter when travelling, although using USB power does reduce the scanning speed significantly to a quoted 8ppm for a 200dpi black-and-white or greyscale scan. The optical resolution is unchanged at 600dpi.
Kodak's ScanMate i940 weighs 1.3kg, and can be powered via USB as well as an AC adapter
Measuring a compact 289mm by 107mm by 78mm when closed, and weighing 1.3kg with the AC adapter, the i940 is only moderately briefcase-friendly. However, it does feature a 20-page automatic documentfeeder. It can scan paper weights up to 398g/m², or ID cards and embossed cards up to 1.25mm thick. However, Kodak adds that by configuring the ADF for embossed card scanning, paper weights up to 995g/m² can be scanned. The recommended duty cycle is 500 pages per day.
The ScanMate i940 is supplied with TWAIN, ISIS and WIA drivers and comes with the Kodak Smart Touch software, as well as Scansoft PaperPort and Scansoft OmniPage. Smart Touch allows users to configure multi-step one-click scan settings and assign them to one of nine available function slots. These are invoked by selecting a function number using the scroll button on the ScanMate. For example, a button could be configured to scan a document to PDF and email it. It also comes with the Newsoft Presto! Bizcard application for scanning, storing and managing business cards.
The ScanMate i940 can scan direct to a variety of cloud services
Scans can be created in TIFF, JPEG, RTF, BMP, single/multiple page PDF or searchable PDF formats, and the software includes comprehensive image adjustment and correction features. Cloud integration allows documents to be scanned direct to several services including Evernote, Box.Net, G-Docs and Microsoft SharePoint.
Another new and welcome feature is the availability of a Mac-compatible version, the i940M. This works with OS X 10.6 or 10.7, and is identical except that it only has a TWAIN driver and ships with the Newsoft Presto! PageManager application.
The ScanMate i940 costs €420 (£338) and comes with a three-year next-business-day advance unit replacement warranty.
